Allahabad to be renamed as Prayagraj

Uttar Pradesh cabinet approved renaming of Allahabad as Prayagraj.

"Today, the BJP government has rectified the mistake made by Akbar", a state BJP spokesperson said.

Allahabad is an ancient city located on the confluence of Holy river Ganga and Yamuna. The place where biggest gathering of mankind occurs that is Kumbh Mela. UNESCO has included Kumbh Mela in the Intangible Heritage of Mankind list.

Kumbh mela occurs on the confluence of Ganga , Yamuna and mythological Saraswati. It is biggest gathering of mankind in the world. It can be also seen from the space.

The ancient name of Allahabad was Prayagraj and the name was changed to Allahabad by Mughal king Akbar. Akbar founded a new religion din-i-ilahi and shifted his capital to Allahabad. Akbar built his fort on the confluence of Ganga and Yamuna. The name Allahabad means blessed by god or place where ilahi religion flourished.
